Kenya orders for evacuations in flood-prone areas

Kenya's interior ministry has ordered security teams to start evacuating people in flood-prone regions to safer grounds.

Nearly 200 people have died since heavy rains began last month across much of the country.

Minister Fred Matiang'i has told journalists that the evacuations will be done in the north-eastern, eastern and coastal regions.

The level of flood alert has been raised until the rains subside.

Effective this morning, we have raised the alert level in the country in relation to the flooding situation and have given instructions to our security teams in North Eastern, Eastern and Coast regions to begin evacuation of high risk populations to safer grounds.
