Germany’s armed forces are developing long-range combat drones capable of striking targets deep in enemy territory

Germany’s armed forces are moving forward with plans to develop long-range combat drones capable of striking deep within enemy territory, according to a report by the Handelsblatt newspaper on Monday. 

The move is part of an effort to enhance Germany’s military capabilities and strengthen its defence posture in an increasingly complex security environment.

The Luftwaffe, Germany’s air force, has reportedly requested proposals for deep-strike drone systems from leading defence contractors and startups. Three consortia have been formed to work on concrete concepts for the drones, which would allow the German military to engage targets far beyond its immediate borders.

Among the companies involved in the project are Airbus Defence, collaborating with US startup Kratos, as well as Germany’s Rheinmetall, which has partnered with drone specialist Anduril. Munich-based startup Helsing is also contributing to the initiative, according to the report.

The German Ministry of Defence has confirmed that initial discussions about the development of these drones have taken place, though no formal tender has yet been issued. The ministry has not disclosed further details regarding the timeline or specific capabilities expected from the drone systems.

The development of long-range combat drones marks a significant step in Germany’s efforts to modernise its military forces, particularly as global tensions rise. These drones are expected to provide the German military with enhanced operational flexibility and precision in executing long-range strike missions.

Neither the Ministry of Defence nor the companies involved responded to requests for additional comment on the matter.
