Kaduna Voices United, a coalition of concerned citizens and civil society organisations, has criticised former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of attempting to evade accountability over alleged corruption during his tenure.
The coalition said such actions undermine the seriousness of the allegations and reflect what it described as a broader culture of impunity in the political system.
In a statement signed on Sunday by its Chairman, Yariok Makama Goje, and Secretary, Sunusi Tanimu, the group alleged that rather than directly addressing the corruption allegations, El-Rufai has sought to deflect attention by shifting blame to the National Security Adviser (NSA).
He said, “El-Rufai’s administration was characterized by a blatant disregard for due process and the fundamental rights of the citizens of Kaduna State. He wielded power with an iron fist, seizing and demolishing properties without fair compensation, sacking workers indiscriminately, and instilling fear among the populace.
“These actions were not merely administrative decisions; they were manifestations of a regime that operated outside the bounds of legality and ethical governance. It is disheartening to witness a former leader who, during his time in office, exhibited such shamelessness and irresponsibility, now attempting to evade the consequences of his actions.
“In his recent statements, El-Rufai has attempted to paint himself as a victim of a political conspiracy, claiming that the Department of State Services (DSS) sought to detain him without proper procedure.
“While we acknowledge the importance of due process, it is crucial to remember that accountability is a two-way street. If El-Rufai wishes to challenge the actions of security agencies, he must first address the allegations of corruption that hang over his head like a dark cloud. The citizens of Kaduna deserve transparency and justice, not a diversionary spectacle”.
The group further expressed concern over recent political alignments, including comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in defence of El-Rufai, particularly regarding an alleged airport incident.
The coalition said public officials must consistently uphold accountability and the rule of law, warning against what it described as selective appeals to due process.
The coalition added; “Atiku’s recent defense of El-Rufai’s conduct at the airport, where he condemned the alleged attempt to embarrass the former governor, raises serious questions about his commitment to accountability and the rule of law.
“It is shameful for any leader to stand by a figure who has demonstrated such a blatant disregard for the welfare of the people. El-Rufai’s rhetoric about tyranny and undemocratic practices, while he himself has perpetuated an environment of fear and oppression, is nothing short of hypocrisy.
“These actions exemplify a troubling double standard; while El-Rufai exercised authority with apparent disregard for legal protocols and individual rights, he now seeks refuge in the very legal frameworks he previously undermined when confronted with allegations of financial impropriety.
“This inconsistency not only undermines public trust in governance but also highlights a broader issue regarding accountability among those in power. The expectation that leaders adhere to the principles of justice and fairness is foundational to a democratic society, and El-Rufai’s selective invocation of the rule of law serves as a stark reminder of the need for consistent ethical standards in leadership.
“The citizens of Kaduna are entitled to a government that respects their rights and upholds the rule of law, not one that seeks to silence dissent and evade scrutiny. As Kaduna Voices United, we call upon the relevant authorities to initiate a thorough investigation into the allegations of corruption against El-Rufai.
“It is imperative that all public officials, regardless of their status or past positions, are held accountable for their actions. The culture of impunity must end, and those who have abused their power must face the consequences of their actions”.
The group also urged Kaduna residents to remain engaged in the democratic process and continue to demand accountability and good governance, adding that; “It is our collective responsibility to demand transparency, accountability, and good governance from our leaders.
“The fight against corruption is not just the responsibility of the government; it is a societal endeavor that requires the active participation of every citizen. We reiterate our condemnation of Nasir El-Rufai’s attempts to evade accountability and shift blame. We stand firm in our belief that the truth must prevail and that justice must be served.
“The people of Kaduna deserve better than the legacy of impunity left by El-Rufai, and we will continue to advocate for a government that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens above all else.”
