Nigerian Catholics wore black to mark Ash Wednesday as they protested against insecurity in the country.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) advised that all believers wear black clothing or armbands to mass in solidarity with victims of violence.
CBCN's Archbishop Augustine Akubeze said citizens had been traumatised by what he described as the "repeated barbaric executions of Christians" by Boko Haram militants.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent as a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter.
Many people who turned out for Ash Wednesday services wore black, as seen in this video from Reuters news agency and various tweets:

It’s Ash Wednesday and Catholic nation wild decided to put their ashes in black clothes. We moan for those Nigerian and Christians world wild who were killed as a result of their religion/belief. May the souls of all faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen
